Remember When...

A few days ago, my dad unearthed an old home video of the Gurney holiday show.  I was absolutely enthralled as I saw our classmates as little kids- at the time, I definitely didn’t feel that little! Combined with our poem today discussing childhood innocence, I thought I’d make a list of some aspects that were a part of our lives as youngsters:
  1. Getting Benched- As Gurney students, this was one of the most severe forms of punishment.  However, when benched as a class for causing some innocent mischief, everyone felt pretty tough for that recess period.
  2. Hatching Chicks- What a wonderful science experiment- until one chick is born with a disabled leg, is pecked by all its siblings, then taken to a “special farm” where other disabled chicks go.
  3. Learning Cursive- We all felt so fancy as we learned how to decipher the new form of writing, which quickly fell to disuse.  Remember the days when homework consisted of copying letters in script?  A little easier than a 20 page paper…
  4. Recess- Whether climbing around the amazing Gurney playground or playing hopscotch on the blacktop, we had a nice opportunity to burn off some of our everlasting energy and hang out with friends outside of an extremely “stressful” classroom setting.
  5. Reading Time- An interesting perspective change as we first enjoyed the break of hearing an older kid read to us or came back as the big third graders to read to the “little kids.”
What other fond memories of our younger days do you have?

  1. Brooke!
I love this list! I like to think back at the good times we all had at Gurney and the Intermediate School. One time, me and a few friends make a secret fort in a part of the Gurney playground and would not let other people enter. Unfortunately, we got benched and I felt like I had gotten into so much trouble and I was scared to tell my parents. Thanks for bringing all these funny memories back!
