At this point, I’ve been staring at a blank blog page for about twenty minutes, desperately searching for motivation in any form. However, my “searching” has involved a lot of Facebook, iTunes, and texting, with not much work actually getting done. All of this procrastination and about fifty people’s Facebook statuses about the joys of studying have given me lots of time to reflect on the midterm experiences of the past few years.
Freshman Year: The first time we experienced finals, I can safely say at least 90% of us displayed utter fear. I remember making a study schedule which had me preparing a week and a half in advance along with creating intense study guides for every class. Midterms, along with high school, were new and unfamiliar, which made them absolutely terrifying. For me, studying was sitting in a silent room for a few hours every night and practically rereading the textbook.
Sophomore Year: Round 2. Coming into midterms this time, we knew what to expect. We were beginning to understand how these tests worked, while we finally began to understand that high school wasn’t as big and scary as we originally thought. However, I was still about equally as stressed. The classes seemed intimidating at the time, and teacher’s expectations seemed more extreme. However, we still managed to power through.
Junior Year: Our first finals as upperclassmen- we were expected to really start to understand the school and were beginning to understand that there are worse things in life than a bad grade on a test. However, with parents, teachers, and counselors bringing up college more than ever, we still buckled down, working hard to get a good grade in order to secure our futures.
Senior Year: With applications sent or college decisions made, the idea of sitting down for a fun night of studying seems less appealing than ever. With finals only two days away, I have yet to open a book to review. However, I am determined to be optimistic about my worsening case of senioritis. After going through the process of finals for the past three years, we have a much better idea of what our finals will look like, how to prepare, and how to remain level headed about the task in front of us. On that note, I’m off to attempt to get some studying done! Good luck everyone on our final finals!
