Over the past week, I’ve been suffering with a bit of a work overload, which, when paired with my talent for procrastination, has severely decreased the amount of time I have available for sleep each night. Functioning in a sleep deprived state is a feeling all AP English students have come to know and love, and we all have our own techniques for powering through the sleep-induced fog and getting our work done. But in case you’re looking for a new idea or two to help get through the coming late nights of Amsterdam paper work, I decided to research a few methods of fighting off the urge to sleep:
- Air Conditioning: Warmer environments induce sleep more quickly than cooler ones.
- Not Eating: The body uses a great deal of energy when digesting, so eating less reserves more energy to use to be productive.
- Light Exercise: Energizes the body and mind (try http://www.mba-handbook.com/developing_learning_skills/effective_learning_and_reflective_practice/exercises_which_can_be_used_during_study_breaks.php)
- Peppermint Gum: The physical activity of chewing can help keep you awake, while the mint flavor has been know to help stimulate thought
- Some More Random Things: Apparently, pulling down on your earlobes or tickling the top of your mouth with your tongue can help too!
